Whirlpool washer makes loud noise (start of cycle) – What to Check & Replace

If your washer is making this noise (listen to the audio here) at the start wash cycle, then you need to check (and possibly replace) the shift actuator.

What does the noise mean?

This noise is most likely coming from the washer’s shift actuator – it is because it is never actually shifting….it is trying to but it is not getting successful and unless you move the lever manually to have it snap down right into place, it won’t always start the wash and run the cycle to its completion…

Explained further

When the shifter or shift actuator fails, you typically start hearing grinding, clicking, or even buzzing sounds since the internal motor is struggling to complete cycle transitions.

As I had mentioned, for the most part, it is the shift actuator that has become damaged so it is not having enough “oomph” to shift as expected.

Hence the noise.

That is why I recommend you swap out the part- it’s not pricey as you can see here and it’s a really simple DIY repair to do at home.

Just note that this is a whirlpool WTW5100HC0 smart top load but, in general, it is the most common cause of that noise across multiple whirlpool top loading models.

Did I mention that the part is also best remedy for fixing your washer even when it is getting stuck on sensing(with unusual sounds)?

What else you can check (if that did not work)

  1. Actual shifter assembly- you may also need to see if it is still looking good.
  2.  Splutch kit –  installing a new could also be a solution.

Please note that I’ve added a video on YouTube explaining this in detail and how to do the swap effortlessly …you can watch it below

In summary

If your whirlpool washer is making this annoying noise (listen to the audio here again) at the start wash cycle, then you need to swap out the shift actuator (the shifter a.k.a. the actuator).

You can order the part from Amazon here and follow the above YouTube Video to do the swap yourself!

See you in the next one!
